Saying Goodbye To My 20s

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they must face the reality that they have just turned 30. This happened to me this week. Yes. I know. I seem so fun and youthful. Little would you know, I was born in the mid 1980s and have reached the proper age for being put out to gay pasture.

For my 29th birthday, I performed Marina and the Diamonds’ “Teen Idle” and shared it with my friends and family on Facebook. I think it matched up pretty well with how I was feeling about beginning the final year of my 20s. (If you ask real nice in the comments below, I might even share that video here.) And yes, I’m very aware of my limited musical talent. This is all in good fun.

I really enjoyed sharing that and thought it’d be fun to do again this year. And because I like attention I guess? What are you doing right now? Watch me! Watch me! Noah and the Whale’s “5 Years Time” seemed pretty appropriate for the sense of nostalgia and panic at the realization that your youth is suddenly trickling away you might feel when turning 30. I mean, I assume that’s how people feel. I wouldn’t know because I’m not panicked at all about second puberty, or the degradation of my metabolism, or being the oldest person on SnapChat. I just don’t think about those things.

Okay, fine, I think about those things ALL THE TIME. Life changes so quickly and in the blink of an eye, years have passed you by. Every day I try to remember to appreciate this moment. It’s difficult but it’s something I strive for. In the past decade, I’ve had many friendships that have meant so much to me and faded away. Relationships with boyfriends I intended to grow old with but don’t speak to anymore. Family members I was close to who have since passed on. Life changes. Here’s to the ever unfolding mystery.
