It took me a minute but I finally finished The Cha It took me a minute but I finally finished The Charioteer. It might be that I’m not fluent in the British slang of the time period or the way Mary Renault often invites you to read between the lines, but it definitely took me a minute to finish this book. Published in 1953, when homosexuality was still criminalized in Britain. So much of the desire, intimacy, and even the dialogue in this book is coded. There were passages I had to reread several times before I realized what Renault was actually saying. While it did slow me down at times I also really appreciated just how difficult it was to write openly queer fiction in that era. I also loved the way the novel explores masculinity from several angles. Laurie finds himself caught between Andrew’s idealism and innocence, Ralph’s closeted realism, and meanwhile the world is constantly telling him what a “real man” should look like. Even his new stepfather becomes another voice policing masculinity. In the end, while Laurie has to make a choice between two men, he’s also making a decision about what kind of life he wants to live. Have you read The Charioteer?
